The Concordia Theatre contains 500 seats and the ticket prices for a recent play were $43 for adults and $28 for children. For one matinee, if the total proceeds were $16,805, how many of each type of ticket were sold?

    Let A = # of adult tickets sold

    Let C = # of children tickets sold

    You didn’t say it was a sold out matinee, but it should be assumed:

    A + C = 500

    $43A + $28C + $16805

    Rewrite the 1st equation to ready it for a substitution into the 2nd: A = 500-C

    43(500-C) + 28C = 16805

    21500 – 43C + 28C = 16805

    4695 = 15C

    C = 313 <——- # children tickets

    A = 500-313 = 187 <——- # of adults tickets
