Will a CD set off a metal detector?

I’m just trying to figure out if a CD would set off a metal detector at let’s say a court house or airport? It seems to me like it is all plastic, but witht he metal flakes on it, I was curious.

Yes, depending on the detector. A CD is a sandwich of sorts. It is a thin metal disc that is laminated into a plastic package. The data is then “burned” into the metal by a laser beam. This causes nearly square pits with sharp edges that, when read, causes the read beam to return while a non burned space scatters the beam and so is not read. This sets up a pattern of 1s and 0s that are digitally read to extract the data. Soooo … some detectors can detect the presence of a CD disc. However, most retail store detectors are not quite so sensitive and that is why those little plastic anti-theft strips are put into the package.
