My dog was trying to poop and just one small piece came out then was hanging out of it’s butt by a thin string it looked like. Then he continued straining trying to poop some more. It took a really long time for the second small piece to come out and again looked like it was attached to something like a string, but it looked like everything was covered in slime or mucus. It finally fell out, but all day he keeps trying to poop and only a little comes out and most the time hanging by a string. I called the vet and the receptionist just told me she didn’t know why and that I could bring him in for a walk in visit, but I really can’t afford it if I really don’t have to take him in. Is there anything I can do for him or do I have to go to the vet?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I finally gave in and took him to the vet since I was so worried. Turns out he had a bacteria infection and nothing else they could find. It must have been just the mucus that looked stringy. So I’m glad it isn’t something worse.

Sounds like the pooch is constipated and the stringy thing could be grass, weeds ,piece of sting it has eaten (?). the dog needs to drink plenty of fresh cool water to flush out its intestinal tract, Walk the dog fast or long play ball with it take it swimming this is to help the movement and stimulate the dog to go again…Pumpkin is a good way to help with constipating, this helps to soften the stools again Not to use the pie filling kind use the Pureed can give the dog a few table spoons to eat,,,DO NOT give your dog any human laxatives of any kind these are harmful to dogs they cause dehydration, diarrhea and problems with the gastrointestinal area….
dogs eat grass sometimes and they do not chew like we do. they just gulp their food, so the grass stays intact and goes through the bowel with the poop connected. It is fairly common. what is not common is the slime or musoous. Be careful and do not pull it out unless you know it will not cut his anus. If you try to pull out plastic or grass or something that can cut, that he has eaten and is hanging out, you can actually tear and cut his anus horribly. Plain long grass can cut like a razor when pulled on . Then you will need to see the vet for sure and IT will be expensive. I would watch the dog, if he continues to strain and have mucous GO TO THE VET before it gets worse and costs MORE> When you own a dog, you have to take it to the vet when it needs to go… It is ILLEGAL not to take a dog to the vet when he needs it. You can be fined quite a LOT or lose your dog.
He may feel the poop still on him. If it was hanging by like a string, it could be a hair that is still inside him but part of the way out. Take a kleenex and try and grab at the area to see if it is a hair that is bothering him. If it is, just pull it out. Or just wipe his butt so it feels cleaner to him.
My dog got into a grocery bag today and ate almost all of a bag of ham..he has been drinking excessive amounts of water and urinating a lot, even in the house. Is this something that will pass or should I take him to the vet? Other than the thirst he seems to be ok
Peice Of Poop
Possibly some human hair in there somewhere. Just pull the poop out when that happens. Use a poop bag or gloves to do it.
Does it hurt him when he poos? If so, I think it’s because your dog has eaten something that isn’t supposed to be eaten, like plastic, string, etc. And he’s just trying to get it out. My dog had eaten plastic before and he tried to get it out, the real solution is just to try to get it out. But, it might hurt him a lot if you try to get it out.
It’s probably a dried blade of grass. Happens to me and I just pull it out.
