He says it is “none of my business”. He is a great kid who is involved in ROTC, Band, and has plans to go to the Naval Academy. He is heavily involved in his FIRST LOVE, so could this be a sexual sign or a rebellion towards me since I have set limits on their dating schedule? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOO, I am not a flaked out parent with nothing to do………I asked him what it meant and he said, “none of my business”. I think it is “MY FREAKING BUSINESS” if he chooses to wearing metal tops over an expensive antique coin that his grandmother gave him which holds sentimental value. OH WELL- he is 2 weeks away from POSSIBLY getting a driver’s permit (he actually turns 16 in 2 weeks). It is HIS decision on HOW he BEHAVES and I will base that on whether-or-not he will he gets the privilege to drive. I am not discouraging him from his “independence”. I want him to come and talk to me. I WILL NOT HAVE HIM BE DISRESPECTFUL WHEN I ASK HIM A SIMPLE QUESTION WHEN I HAVE GIVEN HIM EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD!!!!!! So, for all of the teens out there answering this question, think about that. What have your parents DONE FOR YOU? First of all………..they have given you LIFE.

From what I remember, it was given to a person by a person they had sex with or intended on having sex with, but not actually worn until they had sex.
Talk to your son about the risks of teenage pregnancy and STD’s out there.
While he may not have actually had sex ( it is possible that he is wearing tabs from his own soda can so he appears to be sexually active to his friends) it is obvious that he is at very least thinking about having sex. You won’t be able to stop him, so please educate him, so that he will at least be safe.
Sorry, I know no mother wants this answer, I am dreading my kids reaching the teenage years when I have to deal with this subject. Good Luck.

OK, first off, are you talking about the round tops off soda bottles or the tabs to open cans? Necklaces with the bottle tops are just in style right now, so if that’s it then no big deal.
The tabs apparently have all sorts of sexual meanings, but I’m 19 and I didn’t know that until reading the answers above, so your son may not either. Remember those jelly bracelets that were really big last year and the year before? Then it came out that they had all sorts of sexual meaning and parents decided that all kids who were wearing were doing all sorts of sex games. Well, I can tell you that I was in high school at the time, and everyone was wearing them but people at my school didn’t know about the sex aspect until we read about it in the papers. And that was true of my sister’s middle school too, and loads of other places I’m sure. So the point is that even if it can be some sex thing, and may be at other places, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is for him. That doesn’t mean it isn’t either, but I don’t like when parents see a couple kids do something and assume it’s the same for all kids everywhere. It could just be somethng like if someone saw someone at another school wearing them and started wearing them himself without knowing what they meant to the other kid, and it just kind of caught on. The point is that only your son and his friends know what (if anything) it means to them, and don’t leap to conclusions based on what people in other places say it means to kids where they are. And even if he is having sex, he’s 16, so what’s the big deal? It doesn’t sound like he’s sleeping around or anything. Besides, if your kid is 16 and your biggest worry is some necklace, I’d say you have a pretty good kid.

when i was 16 which was only 4 days ago it ment how many times u have had sex with a person or people. it was a way of show that u r not prude.

well its been about ten years since we had our little laughs about soda tabs but we said if the little circle thing that holds it to the can wasn’t broken then it was a sexual favor and you gave it to the person who owed you favor rather it be sex, or oral sex or whatever you chose.

Your kid has been taken in by a popular urban legend. Lucky for you i found this Urban Legend site on Yahoo. try not to laugh at him but he thinks tabs = sex.

It’s a fad. I have friends who wear sodapop tabs on necklaces. There’s nothing wrong with it. Or at least I think not.

… let me get this straight. You are flaking out… about you kid wearing a few soda can tabs…? YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE, THAT’s what that means.

I think your a spazz….but that’s not the point. If what others said about sex and crap is true, WATCH OUT. But if he’s goofing off, you’re a spazz….
