Where does this quote come from “a knight in shining armor is a man who has never had his metal truly tested”?

I do not know where it comes from. It would be more amusing if “metal” were spelled as “mettle”. A man (or a woman) does not have “metal”. The word “mettle” sounds the same as “metal” but means “strength of spirit”. in other words it is a “play on words” between “metal” and “mettle”.

This is a play on the words metal and mettle. “Testing someone’s mettle” means to test his strength of character or fortitude. So, the quote means that if your armor is shiny, it’s never been used in a tough situation.
