We stud out our St. Bernard dog. He has champion bloodline, (so please don’t start raking me about overpopulation) so what is a good stud fee? We charge $400.00, but someone told me that that wasn’t enough.
People, come on now, do you think I’d breed my St. Bernard, which are prone to hip displasia without taking him to the vet for tests to assure he is a healthy, well maintained, and a Wonderful representative of this breed! I think not. He has all of his shots and bodily tests, he has champion bloodline, and has got 4 silver medels himself, so when I asked this question, I didn’t think I’d have to give some people the low down on my dog, but I guess I though wrong, because some people just won’t give up the hounding!

All depends on the normal size of a litter, if it is say four charge the cost of two dogs, which is probably $400 or more a piece I assume. You should be entitled to half since it would not be possible without the stud. Some breeders make an agreement to get paid when the litter is born so they get the right amount of course this would have to be a written contract and honest people!

If both parents are not registered (don’t have papers) , that means their puppies cannot be registered. Why would someone want to pay to have their dog mate with one that cannot prove it’s blood lineage? If someone was to not care about any of these & just wants the puppies as companions, then, the owner really shouldn’t be charging a big fee, maybe $100 at the absolute most (since he cannot prove that the dog isn’t predisposed to any medical issues based on not knowing the blood line). Why wold he be entitled to a puppy? That is normally only reserved for someone who breeds registered dogs (one’s that have papers) for showing. Also, before you mate your dog with any other dog, you should always verify that they are both fully up to date on all their shots.
Most stud owners do ask between $600-$1000, sometimes less with a pup from the litter. Your best bet would be to get in touch with other breeders in your area who have studs of the same quality as yours and see what they are charging.
Oh, and make sure he has all his health clearances! You can charge more if he does, and that way you make sure the pups are less likely to get any genetic problems.
Normally the price of a stud fee is the cost of what you would charge for one puppy. I don’t know what St’s go for but if it’s $400 for a quality puppy?? Then that’s reasonable for the stud fee.
Either the price of a pup or the stud owners get pick of the litter. So if an akc pup sells for $600 in your area then thats the stud fee amount, or you can pick one from the litter. I did two akc litters of Saints in my day. Cute as all get go but my God they can destroy a house fast whelping box or not it doesn’t matter!
400. seems fair for a reg.champ bloodline . IF the stud himself is a champ then you would be able to collect much more.
MOst stud fees are the price of a puppie(what the puppies would cost if you were to buy or sell it) or pick of the litter
What do you mean by Champion bloodlines? Does he have a few champions in his lines? Or more? Is he OFA certified? Is his heart OFA’d? Are his eyes CERF’d? What kind of titles does he have?? Is he a show champion himself? Do you require brucellosis testing done on all bitches being brought in for stud?
I would check the going rate in your area. I paid $500. for a champion english bulldog studfee. Good luck!
Typically, the stud fee is the price of a pup.
