What is a “fitting” in the context of a gynecologist consultation?

I read in the novel The Bell Jar, were the girl goes to see a doctor for a “fitting”. It doesn’t say what kind of doctor it was but it says that the other women waiting were pregnant, so i guess it was gynecologist. But the girl of the story wasn’t pregnant and that’s why she goes for a fitting.

I have a vague idea of what it means but if someone knows exactly what it means please tell me!

Thank you!

She was having a diaphragm fitted for birth control. You can’t buy these in a drugstore. The right size has to be chosen by a gynecologist.

It refers to placement of an IUD or Diaphragm in a woman’s vagina for purposes of birth control
