The origin of the elephant head refer to a Deity called Ganesha which comes from Hinduism and India .

Ganesha is very popular indeed because he is the” remover of obstacles ” Thus no prayer is ever started without first revering him . This has spread to all over Asia . You can find him even in downtown

Bangkok’s temples . He is the son of Shiva .

As far as the heads are concerned this is also about Hinduism . No God has three heads or ten as sometimes seen .Its just symbolism that God sees everything . (Omnipresence )

The three headed elephant is of Buddhist/Hindu origin (Airavata or Erawan). The symbol was used in the Kingdom of Laos flag. The three heads of the elephant came to represent each of the former small kingdoms of the Kingdom of Laos: Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Xieng khouang.

The elephant is usually considered a symbol of wisdom, greatness and at some point in history an important instrument of war. Many former Lao kings prized these huge animals, especially the light color/albino-like elephants (white elephant like the one in the flag).

Nowadays it seems to me the Three Headed Elephant represents the lost monarchy of Laos. The symbol can still be seen in a few monuments and temples in Vientiane (Ho Phra Keo) and in a lot more in temples and buildings in Luang Prabang (the former Royal Capital).

The white elephant is a common royal symbol in Southeast Asia, the three heads referred to the three former kingdoms Vientiane, Luangprabang, and Champasak which made up the country.

The three headed elephant represents Erawan, the Lao version of Airavata, the steed of Indra. It represents the Lan Xang kingdom (Kindom of a Million Elephants), which is in present day Laos and Northeast Thailand, as well as successor kingdoms and the defunct royal flag. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airavata#Erawan
