Chasing ghosts means your looking for something that isn’t there. An explanation for an event for reasons that don’t exist.

Example is searching for that clue in your bf/husbands belongings that proves he’s having an affair when he never is having an affair, he loves you. You’re chasing a ghost. You find jewelry in a package that is labeled for the girl he loves and you believe you found proof, only to get that gift shortly thereafter for your birthday or anniversary present. You’re chasing a ghost.

I think you get the idea.

Symbolically, ghosts represent memories or times past. They also represent false hopes that you once had perhaps?

In a more literal sense it can mean chasing false hopes or something that does not really exist.

Probably about the same thing as, “You’re just pissing into the wind.”

Wasting time on something you can’t do or catch, so you’re just “chasing ghosts”.

I would think it would mean chasing after something you can’t find. Not sure though.
