Red light is on the left side and green light is on the right side. White light is in the rear. They are anti collision light at night.

All aircraft have standard light for recognition and collision avoidance. The red and green lights you see are to show the left (Red) and right (Green) side of the aircraft. A small white light is aslo seen on the rear of the aircraft. With factors like differing speeds and sizes it can be difficult to know whether and aircraft is moving way or towards you at night. The red flashing light is a rotating beacon aiding visability. Most modern aircraft also have strobe or flashing lights for better visability as well. It’s all about seeing and being seen.

    Hope that helps.

All aircraft have red and green lights, called ‘position indicator lights’ or ‘navigation lights’ Red on the left side, green on the right. This is so you can tell which direction the aircraft is moving at night. The ‘flashing beacon’ which is located on the tail or the underside of the aircraft and is usually a red, flashing light. This only indicates that the engine is running. EDIT: Apparently it is looking for something.

‘Red & Green should never be seen.’ As the old saying goes b/c if you do see them at the same time something is headed right at you.
