  This has nothing to do with a similarly worded military phrase. Dogs can smell when a female is in heat, which is where this phrase originated from. Having one’s “nose wide open” means a male is lusting after a female and can figuratively ‘smell’ her lust/infatuation.

  Isn’t the expression to have your eyes wide open, which is to watch out for things. Don’t have blinkers on.

  Nose wide open must mean be ready for unexpected smells!!!
