what does “eat me under a table” mean?

Kate Winslet was on David Letterman and said that Cameron Diaz, who eats a lot, could eat her under a table. Is it funny just because it’s ridiculous? or what does it mean?

Um, it is funny because it sounds sexually perverse. But to put someone “under the table” means that they are better at it than you. Like to “drink someone under the table” means that you can handle more alcohol than the other person. So Cameron Diaz can eat alot more food in one sitting than Kate Winslet.

The original statement is “I could drink you under a table” (drink more alcohol than you) but Kate made a joke to Letterman saying that she eat more food than Letterman could, which mockes the old statement or joke and is pretty funny / witty.

“drink you under the table” is the original phrase.

it means a person can out drink the other, meaning they can continue to drink while the other passes out under the table.

so to say one can eat another under the table, means they can out eat them till the other pukes or gives up.
