    Down The Stretch Meaning

Dan has it right. It’s originally a phrase from horse racing. The stretch is the part of the racetrack between the last turn and the finish line. The the early part of a horse race, the riders are usually “jockeying for position”, trying to get on the rail, making sure they don’t get boxed in. At that point of the race, they don’t necessarily want to lead, but they want to be in a good position. After the final turn, they enter the “stretch run”, where every rider is going flat out and riding their hardest to go in front and win the race.

The term migrated to other sports, keeping it’s meaning as the final part of a game or a season, where all competitors are striving and pushing to finish on top.

The stretch is from Horse racing, the front straight way to the finish line.

In a close race the horse that stretches his neck the farthest wins by a nose.

Sports analogies cross sports all the time, a boxer who can’t stop an over handed right is stuck in a sticky wicket.
