What can I substitute for Plastic Cement in Model Rockets?

I know when building Model Rockets, you essentially want to use Plastic Cement. Problem is, all the stores around me, for some reason, no longer carry Models of any kind, really. No model cars, planes, rockets. And as such, they don’t carry Plastic Cement. So, I was wondering what glue alternatives I could use that would work in putting together a Model Rocket. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The model rockets I build are made of paper and wood so I use wood glue like Elmer’s.

If you do have a plastic model, there is a plastic cement still available. I bought some at Michael’s and Wall Mart.

The reason the old plastic cement was taken off the market is because dummies were sniffing it and gluing up their brains. The new stuff is non-toxic and of course does not work as well.

A usable substitute for styrene model cement is Super Glue (more generically called cyanoacrylate adhesive, or sometimes CyA). The advantage of CyA is that it is useful for joining dissimilar materials, like plastic onto paper. A good example is when you need to join a plastic fin unit onto a paper body tube.

CyA comes in different viscosities or thicknesses: thin, medium or thick. For most rockets, medium is fine as it won’t run all over the parts you apply it to, and it gives you enough time to get parts into position.

Be very careful when using CyA. It is advisable to wear rubber, vynil or nitrile gloves to keep it off your fingers. If you happen to get it on your skin, start by washing it off with warm water and soap. If this doesn’t work, you should have some fingernail polish remover with acetone to soften the adhesive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety precautions when using CyA.

Good luck, fly safe and pay forward!
