We have a fire safe Shaw-Walker file cabinet at work. A fine white powder flies on opening.?

How can we find out if this is asbestos? This fine white powder also covers the files inside the filing cabinet.

Well asbestos tends to be fibrous not powder and fire proof safes tend to use concrete as a thermal mass. They’re rated by how long they can protect the contents in a fire so it’s easier and cheaper with thermal mass than to actually insulate. Also a combination of concrete and styrofoam has a very high insulation value.

You should be able to contact Shaw-Walker at 1-800-343-5665, give them the model number and serial number and ask if there’s any asbestos in it.

its your workplace all you need to do is say that your worried about it. under OSHA and MSDS standards they have to either get rid of it or figure out what it is. if they don’t and say oh its nothing call OSHA and report it. you wont get in trouble they cant fire you and they wont even know its you.
