firstly, don’t write a story intent on using a certain piece of figurative language – indeed, I used to write essays which were full of ‘flowery’ language but lacked any substance. Having said that, I like the idea of starting in the waiting room, allowing the suspense to build up. You could try:
– My heart was beating like a cheetah chasing prey.
– My heart was out of control, it jumped as if prompted by an electrical surge.
– My heart danced with the ticking of the hospital clock.
Good Luck.

I like Kay’s comparison to the horse. You should consider that!

my heart beating fast as a hummingbird’s wings
my heart beating as fast as an alarm clock
Alternatives:
my heart beating so fast it feels like a hum.
my heart fluttering like a butterfly learning to fly.
my heart feeling like a fly in a cobweb, with nothing to do but wait.
I really like the idea of your story..you could email me some of it? 🙂
even if you don’t use them good luck 🙂
