Santa Maria? italian translation i think?

My friend always says ‘santa maria’ like when something goes wrong, i think its italian? what does it actually translate to?

    Your friend is probably Catholic. He’s saying Saint Mary!(Blessed Mother of God) in vain I suppose.

    It’s kind of like saying ‘Oh my God!’ just a different religious name. Like Oh my Santa Maria!

    Santa Maria means Saint Maria (in Italian and Spanish) if you hadn’t caught onto that.

    Either “holy Mary” (as in the Latin prayer, “Sancta Maria, mater dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus …”, “Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners …”), or he’s talking to Santa‘s wife, Maria, who wraps the presents before he delivers them at Christmas 🙂
