possible to make a 2.8 liter v6 fast?

i have a 1992 camaro w/ a 2.8 liter v6 engine… i was just wondering if there was a cost effective way of making my car fairly fast… or should i get a bigger engine like a 3800 v6 turbo or maybe a v8…

thanks

Like others have said hit up thirdgen.org. They have a V6 board with die hard guys that mod their 2.8/3.1’s

To JohnS. I’d double check your RPO codes. There is NO such thing as a factory L98/T5 combo in a thirdgen. This topic has been beaten to death and every person that thinks they have the Bigfoot of thirdgen combos later finds out they have a 305 or a 350 car with a T5 swapped in. Unless you have the RPO code for the T5 trans and the L98/B2L RPO code for the 350TPI motor you have a 305 OR someone took a L98 Iroc and swapped in a T5. Again there is not a single piece of documentation out there showing a L98/T5 combo from the factory.

okay bro i am a pro at the 2.8 Liter 173ci V6 but you said you have a 1992 Camaro im guessing you have a Base or RS which are basically the same thing except for some complicated details anyways in 1992 there was no (2.8 Liter 173ci V6) the (2.8 Liter V6 173ci was last made in 1989) if what you say that you have a (V6 in a 1992 Camaro RS you have a 3.1 Liter V6 191ci rpo named LHO) that makes 140HP and 180 ft lbs of torque but since you say you got a 2.8 V6 in there it must be a swap i dont know why they would downgrade from the 3.1 to the 2.8 maybe you got your years mixed up and you have a 1989 or earlier Camaro Base or RS anyways though bro here you go what you can do for your 2.8 Liter 173ci V6 is get the 2-K&N High Flow Air Filters,Remove the Catalyic Converter,Install a High Performance High Flow Muffler such as Flowmaster, get some performance pulleys, get a chip bro from hypertech or Jet they are awesome i had installed one on my 1988 Camaro 2.8 Liter 173ci V6 and ive noticed a big increase in accelleration you could also Turbo/Supercharge it they do make a supercharger for the 2.8 V6 i youst to know who made it but i forgot but google it and im sure you will find it send me an email bro i have stressed over this issue many times and now my 88’Camaro 2.8 Liter V6 is pretty decent speed wise with the mods GOOOD LUCK

I have an idea what John said, but having had a 91 Camaro v6 in the family back in the day, that’s a 3.1L v6.

A 93-95 model 3.4L from a Camaro/Firebird would swap in for some more power, but that’s about it.

A TPI 350 would drop in as it was a 1992 model year factory option for the car, but you need the trans, radiator, engine bay harness, and some other stuff to make that all work.

If you want speed – you will pay for it. Unless you ‘cheat’ and use nitrous – but that can wear out your engine very fast!

I would say get a V8 – but there are quite a few people I know that have taken V6’s and made them pretty powerful – but like I said, it isn’t cheap because not only do you have to worry about the parts to make the engine fast. But you also have to consider your tranny and everything else because they were made for a V6. If you want to go really fast you have to replace these items because they won’t last long!

    Hey Nate-

John knows his Camaros- I think he offered some great ideas.

You could either put some performance parts on your 2.8 V6, or you could install a V8 in your Camaro, like a GM Goodwrench ‘target’ 350. You can order a stock crate motor for less than $1500 from any GM dealership.

    Good luck with your Camaro!
