PLEASE HELP: My dog ate an alka seltzer pill?

I had a tablet of alka seltzer on my desk and my dog jumped up and ate it, he then proceeded to throw up, and now he does not want to eat his food. Any experts know anything? I can’t call the vet because he does not have a vet yet since we just got him and hes 5 months old. He’s acting normal besides not wanted his food. Thanks!

Call your vet, and give them the list of ingredients. I know I don’t have ipecac around the house, and a good vomit inducer is hydrogen peroxide, if that’s what the doctor tells you to do. This will induce vomiting almost immediately, so take him outside when you give it to him. Just a capful, should be plenty. My dogs often don’t want to eat when they have just vomited, so it could just be that his tummy is trying to settle, and he doesn’t want to eat anything.

Call a vet. I’m not sure a call will help much though, they’d just tell you to “Bring him in,” anyway.

After Googling “What ingredients are in alka-seltzer pills?” I got this:

“Alka-seltzer original effervescent tablets contain three active ingredients, ASPIRIN, sodium hydrogen carbonate and citric acid.”

It’s the aspirin that you should worry about.

Some Alka-seltzer products contain acetaminophen, aspirin, pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, or caffeine so those could be a problem. You need to at least phone a vet and give list of ingredients over phone. They can then give you specific advise on how to deal with the problem and if inducing vomiting is necessary.

It should not be too horrible. Alka seltzer simply reduces the acid within the belly for a little while. It is helping heartburn and to settle stomachs in individuals. Nothing predominant will have to occur to her, at worst she would throw up or have diarrhea.

How long ago did he eat this pill? Would it be normal for him to eat now? Not to worry you, but I would get out the Yellow Pages and find a vet ASAP just in case. If he threw it up it’s a good sign, but just to be on the safe side, phone a vet.

    Good luck!
