My dog ate his collar! what should i do?

My golden retriever ate half of his collar, he didn’t eat any of the metal pieces or plastic pieces. I don’t know if you swallowed it hole or chewed it up and then swallowed. We had a problem in the past where he has eaten underwear and socks hole, and would just pass them or throw them up. Should I just wait it out or take him to the vet? I can’t afford a vet bill right now so I would prefer not to, but if his health is at risk I will. Please, and advice will help.

Keep a close eye on him. If he is eating, drinking and otherwise the same, you just have to , well, wait it out, so to speak. HOWEVER, at the FIRST sign of lethargy, vomiting, changes in feces, go to the vet – there may be a blockage. Good luck.

If his collar was fabric and the missing piece isn’t too long, then he “should” pass it, but if it was very hard rigid plastic, then you probably need to take him to the vet. Watch him closely for any signs of distress such as straining for a bowel movement or stomach discomfort, lack of interest in food or water, or vomiting.

The 100% safe thing would be taking him to the vet because a blocked intestinal tract can be dangerous. If you need to, most vets have payment plans that can put you on track so you don’t break your budget.

I just had the same situation, only my dog almost died — she ate a fabric collar — bit it off my other dog and swallowed it — she needed extensive surgery, but her life was saved — The vet said fabric strings were wrapped around her tongue, esophogas and also wrapped around her bowels (he had to remove six inches of bowel) — she is going to live, and I brought her right in when I saw she was having a problem (did not see her eat the collar) — it is important not to wait — get the dog xrayed immediately — I’ve got a huge vet bill on my hands, but I still have my dog who I love (she’s a rat terrier) —

you will need to take your dog to the vet, because the collar could be blocking an intestine and causing serious problems. The vet will x-ray your dog to see where the collar is and if it’s still in the stomach, he may be able to remove it by gastroscope….if it moved down to the intestine, your dog may need surgery. When you get a dog, you are responsible for it as if it were a child….think about it, if your child swallowed something, would you wait to take him/her to the ER, just because you didn’t want to pay the bill?

I’m sure it will pass… if the dog starts acting funny at all take him in right away. But my little Wesite ate a pretty big hole in a tee shirt and that passed through him, I didn’t even know it had happened until I was out in the yard cleaning up his waist and found all this shirt material in his poop!

i’ve heard of a dog eating a whole pair of chaps (cowboy wear) before and the vet had to scope them out… if it’s a small portion of the collar then he may throw it back up. i would just watch him and if he starts acting differently, take him to the vet. good luck

I would at least call your vet and ask him how long you should wait it out. If it doesn’t happen within that amount of time, I would go to the veteranarian.

He should throw it up or pass it in his poop. Make sure he is Pooping and he’s not blocked up. You’ll have to take him to the vet if he can’t poopy.

If the rest of the stuff he eats went right through him then he should be fine, just monitor him to see if he any signs of constipation

Do not worry about it, just wait until tomorrow, and if he is not feeling well then take him to the vet…….but the vet can not do much for an eatwn collor..
