My cat got into dog heartworm medication!?

ok, so i came home and had my new puppie’s (8 weeks old) heartworm medication in a bagie on the counter, the heartworm treat is less than 1″ wide and deep, and just under 2″ long, my cat got up onto the counter while i was out and ate about 1/2 of it. do i need to be worried about this? shes not acting strange and she could’ve gotten to it hours ago.

I wouldn’t worry, since it was only a half. That’s about how much a dose is for a cat anyway, lol. If she experiences any strange symptoms though, call your vet immediately. Yah.. ya know how everyone says chocolate will kill a dog? Well one time I left a huge butterfinger candy bar in my trash and my dog ate ALL of it.. and she’s still alive today. You’d be amazed at how strong their systems are.

I would call you vet ASAP! some dog meds specifically state dont give or put on cats !!! I would read the package and see what it says! if it says that then you need to call your vet, also save the piece of the heartworm pill that didnt get eaten so you can show if needed how much got eaten….. watch closely for signs anything, vomiting, diarrhea, acting out of character…. if I was you I would call my first thing in the am.. Best of Luck …

Sounds like heartgard! If that’s the case, I know they actually make heartworm preventative for cats too! Although I am not sure if its the exact same drug formula, and surely not as big of a dose. Luckily she only had half of one, and just as all other answers have stated, monitor your cat for signs of drug side affect, and call your vet or the drug company just to be certain! Hopefully your kitty is not only ok, but now also dewormed!

If you know what heartworm medication you had, check their website for a phone number for the company. They may have someone available 24 hours in case of accidental ingestions.

It doesnt really how much of the stuff your cat go into, you should definitly call and consult your vet about it. Untill then continue to watch and pay very close attention to your cat to make sure that the medications arent going to give him an overdose that will affect her.
