IS IT OK IF I PUT 2 FEMALE BUDGIE/PARAKEETS WITH ONE MALE?

I have 2 females and 1 male, the male and one of the females in the same cage. But i have another younger one and sadly her mate past away yestoday =,(. so i was thinking if i put her with my other 2 budgies so she will feel better?

The male and female i have in the same cage are getting along well the female sits in the nestbox alot and the male feeds and grooms her, the female has a dark crusty brown cere and the male has a dark blue one. this has been going on for a long time but no eggs…..they havent mated the female dosnt realy whant to.

It is winter down here in australia (vic) but the weather has been nice the last few days……..enyways, when i got the female that is on her own i tryed to put her in with the two other birds. the male pecked her and then fed her then pecked her then fed her etc etc….is this signs of bonding or something? so i didnt whant to trust him with her and spent like 5 mins trying to get her out. my little avery has a small door =S. and now i am a little scaird my female that has no mate is getting bord and trying to escape, i seen her today lifting up the cage door =S i put begs on it but please reply, thanks!

(keep in mind I haven’t read any of the other answers so sorry if I repeat anything)

Since the pair you have in one cage are male and female AND have a nest box, I strongly advise against introducing another female. It isn’t the male you have to worry about it’s the female. She has a box and she WILL protect it at ALL costs! Fatal fights can break out because of it.

My advice to you is to get a new parakeet for the lonely one. And let them out of their cages every once in a while. Birds aren’t meant to be stuck in cages their whole life. What a miserable existence. (Please don’t take offense to that, I am very sensitive to the subject)

The semi-mating pair you have may eventually have babies as long as they feel safe and maybe with some plants placed around the cage to simulate a natural habitat. But I must warn you, once they have babies they will not stop.

Best wishes to you and I am sorry for your loss.

Not a good idea. The breeding pair regardless of which stage they are at, have a cage they see as their breeding environment. Putting another female in there with their nesting box, means the introduced female will get ideas about breeding due to the nestbox, and regardless of if she is of age ( 12 months minimum ) . The male will likely try and impress the new female and may abandon the first female, and there will be fights and bloodshed over the nestbox and between the two females.

If this was about a male and female in a cage WITH NO NESTBOX and NOT BREEDING……..and adding a second female it would be different. But this is about adding a female to a breeding cage ……..and it is not a good plan.

I wouldnt be worried about the male attacking the new female. I would be more concerned about the female attacking the new female. If both females are in breeding season, they will fight over a next. Not just small pecks and stuff, they will probably both go in the nest and fight. You will hear a lot of screeching and they will both bite each other and give bad injuries. I have sen this first hand and it is not nice. If you buy a bigger aviary and put more nests in than you can put both females in with a male. But i would not put the new female in with the other two atleast until they are out of breeding season.

    I hoped this helped

It can be done but you have to be very careful as you well know. What i would do first is to put the two cages together so that they all get use to seeing each other. Then what i would do is to let the one female out of her cage and to let her walk on the other cage, then put her away and do this with the others. Do this for about a week. Then let the females out together, doing this also for about a week. Then do the one female and male together. After you are sure that they are ready then let all three out together. When they are all getting along fine then that is when i would put them all together. But you have to change the whole cage around so that no one knows that it was theirs or you will have the problem again. You can even change the location of the cage temporarily. The way no one will become territorial. Good Luck

No. It is always better to have more males than females in a cage. Females can become very jealous and possessive and can fight each other quite savagely over the male and nesting sites. It’s best to perhaps separate the hens and introduce them to a male each. There is no guarantee that they will breed however.

The male won’t hurt the hen, it’s more the other way around.

It can be done..But the cage must be large enough..I have many odd numbers of budgies in a cage and some do still breed..

Can you get another bird for the lonely one..Or give it a try see what happens..the male will pick the female he likes most..and the females will fight..Just make sure they do not hurt the odd one..

no since most likely the females will fight over the male and then there is a breeding issue
