Is it legal to shoot Albino Deer in Ohio? It’s illegal in Tennessee, Wisconsin, etc so is it here?

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t hunt, and I couldn’t stand shooting something that elegant and beautiful. This is simply for a story I’m working on.

So is it legal or not?

Update:

That is a good point; the albino are weak and if they reproduce they are very likely to reproduce more albino, therefore weakening the population. But hey, don’t shoot them. You might ruin their pretty coat with blood, and they’re just so pretty.

Most albino animals stand out in their environment and become high priority targets for predators so they don’t live very long in the wild. It is legal to shoot albino animals in the state that I live in. I have never seen one in the wild.

You never mention what state you are from or what type of deer. I am going to assume you are licensed, if required in your state and can legally hunt and you are talking about whitetail. In my state, NY, albino or calico whitetail are not protected and can be taken during hunting season or with a nuisance permit by a person with a big game hunting license. Do some research on Google (LOL I mentioned the “G” word on Yahoo) or call up your state conservation department. It is not illegal to sell the fur here and you do not need a permit for selling the hide. It is illegal to sell deer meat though. If I had a taxidermist mount the head and neck, then I could legally sell it since there is no meat. I would not go as far to say that calico deer are genetically impure. That would be good camo when there is patchy snow and solid brown deer stick out like a sore thumb when they are in a snowy opening. That is just my 2 cents though. Hope this helps.

The Deer you describe is called a Pi bald. and those are just as legal to harvest as any Whitetail deer. An Albino Deer would be white with Pink eyes and hoofs. It is a state by state whether or not Albino Deer are legal to harvest… Always check with your states DNR / Fish and Game Web site. Michigan is considering making it legal to harvest Albino deer.

Generally, it is legal to shoot the Albino deer. They are considered a collection of recessive genes that, if bred, could damage the genetics of the herd.

If it ain’t legal where you are you should petition and change the law. Most of these protective laws were made at the behest of superstitious local natives that thought albinism was an act of God and therefore some kind of bad karma would befall anyone who did kill one. So I guess all the mountain lions an wolves etc suffered bad karma. BS I say shoot at will and bring some hair dye along.

I seriously have no idea, i’m a hunter and I was told albino animals in the wild are bad, because if they breed it could cause problems, so I don’t know why it is. Sorry i’m no help.
