Some communities have local ordinances (laws) that forbid working on a car in public. The idea is that it’s an eyesore. But realistically, the police aren’t going to come unless someone complains, and if they do come, you’ll likely only get a warning.

But more important than that is that your father says not to do it. You still have to listen to what your parents say, unless it’s something illegal.

Also, if you go somewhere else to change the oil yourself, like the back yard, be sure to collect all the oil and recycle it. It’s generally illegal to just dump it on the ground or down the sewer. If your community recycles oil, you might be able to just put it out on the curb in an approved container. Otherwise, you can take it to an oil change place, and they should accept it free of charge.

It’s not illegal in any state. It would only be illegal if someone hired like a garage to do it. No matter what the age is, it is illegal to dump the oil. So don’t worry about the cops locking you up or even giving you a fine/ ticket as long as you aren’t doing it in a public place.

It is not illegal to change your own oil. What you do with the used oil, however, may be. The used oil is a hazardous waste and MUST be recycled properly.

Nope. I do them all the time here at home & have been for the last 20 yrs. I have a place where I can return my filter and old oil to for recycling.

Depends on your dad’s homeowners association. Some won’t let anyone do repairs in the driveways.Could be your dad just doesn’t want you spilling oil in the drive.Lol,my sons not allowed either.

He’s ******* with you dude, he probably doesn’t want you to do it alone and doesn’t want to go out there and help you. Just ask if you and him can set a time to change it together.
