A contractor’s wheelbarrow has a 6 cu ft capacity, but a homeowner’s wheelbarrow has only 4 cu ft capacity. Here’s an example of each type:

    If it’s a contractor’s wheelbarrow, you’ll get about 4.5 wheelbarrows full. If it’s a homeowner’s wheelbarrow, you’ll get about 6.75 wheelbarrows full.

the most common size wheelbarrow holds 6 cubic feet when loaded level. 1 cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet (3x3x3=27) therefore 1 cubic yard is equal to 4 1/2 wheelbarrows.(27 / 6 = 4.5) some of the 2 wheel style wheelbarrows hold 8 cubic feet which means it will olny take 3 3/8 wheelbarrows (27 / 8 = 3.375) keep in mind the mulch will fluff up as you load it, so you may have to make a couple extra trips anyway.

Bighorns answer is wrong. A cubic yard is 3ft x 3ft x 3ft = 27 cubic feet. When you buy a wheelbarrow it should say how large the basin is in cubic yards or cubic feet.

The really big wheel barrows hold just about 1/3 a cubic yard. Those shallow ones hold only 1/5. Depends on your wheel barrow I guess.
