In the book, “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser, the author states in the introduction that, “Fast food has proven to be a revolutionary force in America;” he sees it as a “commodity and as a metaphor.” How does fast food serve as a metaphor for American life? Elaborate.

It reflects that Corporate America thinks its citizens are as dumb as dogs… and like Pavlov’s dog, we fall for it. McCorporate companies see it like fattening the herd, keep the people sated and unhealthy and you’ll keep them hooked on their product and on the drugs we sell to cure diabetes, high cholesterol, etc…
many “strip malls” and areas that have restaurant after restaurant on the same street on the outskirts of town were once the farmlands that produced real food that Americans used to eat an abundance of, now they produce happy meals =(

we want things now and fast. we take the easy way out and the one that gives us the most results in a timely fashion such as fossil fuels. however, the food might be harmful to our health. we consume these fast foods knowing that they are bad for us but don’t think about it because the happiness of fast fixes temporarily outweighs the costs. for example: we continue to use fossil fuels because it’s what we’re used to and its an easy way to produce energy. we don’t think of the long term damage that we can do to our planet or that our fast easy energy is going to run out and when it does run out its the equivalent of a heart attack from too much fast food.

1) People chose fast food because it tastes good, and not because it’s good for them. In the same way, they make many decisions based on what they want, and not what they should do.
2) It is heavily processed food, and bears little resemblance to naturally grown food. Our lifestyles take us further and further away from nature.
3) It is cheap, but of poor quality. People often go for price rather than quality.
4) It makes meals something to rush through, rather than slow down and enjoy, like much of what we do today.

Strangely enough – Mexico opened chain of Taco Bell in Mexico! The people out there just hate it! They are stunned by the “tacos”, “burritos”, which Taco Bell serves!
