I don’t know the history of the custom in this country, I’m sure someone will either know or look it up so I won’t look it up. A parent has a lot of happy memories about the day their child was born and joined their family. My daughter is adopted and many adoptive parents have different feelings about their child’s birthday. I was there the day my daughter was born and though I was not the one who gave birth to her, I have very happy memories of that day. It was the day she joined our world and became part of our life and I like to celebrate it. Even when we’re past childhood, it’s another year we’ve survived and it’s nice when people make note of the day we were born. When I say Happy Birthday to my child or a friend it’s my way of saying, “Hey, today however many years ago you were born and I think the world is a better place with you in it. I hope you think so too.”
