how do i find out what the last reading was on my odometer?

was told that the insurance company could not get a od reading because the batt. was dead

Update:

What is that a salvage title? If so it wont ever matter what it says the mileage is. If not, maybe you can get it re-inspected, but usually once the title is marked TMU the DMV wont change it back.

If it is a model with a digital display for the odometer, then you will need a battery. Or if you had an oil change recently, you can try to use that number. Even to download it with an OBDII scanner the battery will need to be working.
