The water seal would most likely dissolve the asphalt shingle and make a big mess. A better method is to buy some roll roofing for a quick fix.

If the asphalt shingles are degraded to the point of needing moisture barrier, they’re toast — no pun intended. Don’t waste the money on Thompson’s. Rip off the old shingles and tar paper, put down new 30 pound tar paper, and reshingle. It will look great, will perform well, and will last 20 years or so, barring hailstorms that is. You say shed roof — it that means a roof on a shed, you have an easy job. If by shed roof you mean a single flat roof which slopes away from a building, then you must properly flash the high (building) side of the roof to prevent water penetration down the inside of the wall.

That doesn’t sound like a good idea. If you even have a vague idea how to shingle, a shed should only take a few hours and cost very little. Better than having to replace the framing later than skimping now.

no…. thompson’s water proof is for wood only. if your asphalt shingles are good, and installed correctly, you should not need any extra preventive maintenance for years to come, if any –
