Graduate Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?

They say to never give up on what the heart wants right? I’m very interested in joining this sorority— however, now that my undergraduate years are over, I will have to try to solicit membership through a graduate chapter. I tried out once during undergrad but did not make the line— will that be held against me negatively??

I know that graduate chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc don’t usually have intake all that often and that membership is invite only. However, after doing a bit more research I have come upon something saying that you must be sponsored by members who have certain credentials.

I am also a bit nervous being that I graduated early from college ( I’m only 20) that there will be a huge age difference between myself and the members of the graduate chapter. How do I go about trying to build a relationship with these women without them thinking of me in regards to my age. :/

Also, I know that graduate chapters are very big on community service; am I supposed to have a certain amount of hours done? Or do they just look at the fact that I simply volunteer my time to help others? I volunteer at the Salvation Army tutoring children and with the women’s group at my church with clothing drives, going to nursing homes and etc.

Guidance from someone in a grad chapter would be kindly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Update:

Thank you for your answer. Is it true that the sponsoring women must have certain credentials?

I was brought into a graduate chapter in 2008. I would like to clear up a few things with you. Rather me than one of my mad sorors because I was once in your shoes.

First things first. There is absolutely NO soliciting membership in graduate chapters. We have no rush events nor interest meetings. You go to events hosted by the chapter in order to get acquainted with members of the chapter. You need one sponsor and two co-sponsors in order to be considered for membership in the sorority. It should not be an issue that you were not selected in undergrad, however, while being considered into graduate membership, you may be asked why you did not obtain undergraduate membership. I know with undergrad, grades are an issue for not making the line. For graduate membership, you need a C+ accumulative GPA to be considered.

Your age does not matter when being considered for graduate membership. For example, I joined the year after graduation being 24. Someone on my “line” was 52 years old and another was 60. I guarantee you there is someone in any grad chapter in their 20s. Distinguishing yourself is key. You must show maturity and the will to carry out the sorority’s motto.

Community service is essential in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Usually undergraduate chapters look for you to record and document CS hours. Graduate members tend to find candidates while doing CS. You will find my sorors in the church, NAACP, socials, etc.

I hope to have helped you on your journey. Just an FYI, many of the things you asked about have been answered online from my sorors. Do some more web searching for membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The national website is our biggest information referral.

I am a graduate member of a Chapter and I feel that it is not necessary to be so down on someone who asked a question. She may just not have a lot of information about what it means to be in a sorority. The tone of your answer is what Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority does not need, for the pure and simple reason that there are so many inactive sorors, staying out of chapters because of all the negativity. People do not have time to devote their lives, finances and talents to an organization that will be rude and harsh to one another. That is not what Sisterhood is all about. This young lady is obviously very unaware of the history and bi-laws of a Sorority and the only way for her to learn is to be mentored and taught the history and meaning of being an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. Someone had to teach me, (my big sisters) and it is my job to teach someone else and help them learn about greek organizations, not tear them down, belittle them and have no kind words for them. If I were treated like this by an organization that I am interested in, I would probably run, not realizing that we are all not that insensitive and uncaring. It sends a very bad message to someone interested in pledging.

The central core of Alpha Kappa Alpha is for African American women to serve their communities where deemed appropriate. Probates and Line Names are just an extra-curricular part of the sorority. Whether if they conduct these types of activities in graduate chapters should be irrelevant if you really want to become a member. As the other lady stated community service should be done from the heart not because you need it to fulfill a requirement for applying for membership. Not saying that you are this is just a general statement to all fellow aspirants. Pursuing membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha takes a patient, dedicated woman who has instilled in her the same principals of the organization. Good luck.
