People generally wear white lab coats for safety reasons while doing lab work. Mechanical engineers would not have a great reason to wear a white coat, but nobody would stop one if he/she chose to. If you want to wear the white coat, go for something with more lab work involved. Heck, I’m a geologist and I have to wear one fairly frequently.
At most companies, the engineers wear casual clothes, since they are mainly working on computers. It’s the technicians (the employees who build hardware) who often wear special clothing.
For example, a technician working with sensitive electronics wears an anti-static smock (could be white!), while a technician working with hazardous chemicals wears gloves and goggles. A welding technician wears a helmet with UV protection.
I have never seen an ME wearing a white coat.
In my 35 years of working as a mechanical engineer I wore a suit and tie much of the time. Jeans and sports shirts some of the time. I wore a grin on my face all of the time because I couldn’t believe people actually paid me a lot of money to do what I was doing.
Most mechanical engineers wear 15 year old faded shirts with mustard stains.
