Care assistant at Nursing home, what does bank staff mean………….?

Ive been in my new job for 3 days, I was speaking to another new girl who said she was going abroad for 2 weeks holiday, she is able to do this as she is bank staff. I looked on the board and so i am. I thought i was a care assistant…

What does this mean? I thought bank staff meant they just used you when they need you, but it seems silly as i have no previous experience and they are training me.

I hope they don’t let me go as it has taken some organising for childcare for my 3 little ones

Update:

No ive not signed a contact, which i did think was quite odd. They have given me a form for bank details, and they paid for my CRB check. Ive been told il be doing between 30-36 hours a week, and the shifts are always the same 7.30am-2.00 or 2.00-8.30pm or a full day is 7.30-8.30pm!!!! but never the same week to week

You are still a care assistant, just a bank care assistant rather than a contracted member of staff. Surely you signed a contract? What did it say in that? You should have contracted hours if you aren’t bank. Perhaps it’s a mistake on the board, you need to speak to your manager about this really.

Edit – I work on the bank at the nursing home where I used to work full-time. I still had to sign a new contract though. It should have been explained to you at the interview that you would be bank. From the sounds of things you will be getting plenty of hours though so I don’t think you need to be too worried. The only thing it might play havoc with is Tax Credits if your hours fluctuate too often. You need to talk to your manager to clarify things.

There is a flexibilty between you and them as to when you work;. I was bank staff when i was at Uni so i chose night shifts for studying, but cleared time for revision and exams.

Even though you are newly trained/in training, think of it as numbers. For each shift they need a certain number of certain graded staff, including unqualified.

I had to do the undesirable shifts to build up a rep to get the ones i wanted in the end. Same as any other type of shift work, really. You are now part of a bank of flexible staff.

Bank Staff are usually with an Agency. They do not have a permanent contract but can work when they choose to do so.
