Can you describe to me how to break a pecan shell so that the Pecan stays fairly in tact?

I bought some pecans in a shell for a very good price and now I want to de-shell them so that I can use them in baking, but when I crack the shell, the pecan breaks into small pieces. Any suggestions?

Crack gently all the way around, in circles and up and down the nut, w/ hand crackers.

Or, use a pecan cracker w/a handle that gently squeezes both ends at once, crackign gently. Most pecan meat comes out in halves.

There are several different types of crackers that are on the market. You can also take them to a small pecan store/factory to have them shelled for you.

Yeah, good joke. Read it a couple of times. And I do love pecans.

When I was growing up we had to shell nuts all the time. We just used a nut cracker and put enough pressure on it to crack the nut shell, but not to break it so hard as to destroy the nut inside.

I think that you gently heat them in the oven and the heat cracks the shells for you.
