can somebody help with song analysing?

basictly i really need to analyse the song

THE A TEAM – ED SHEERAN

but i dont undersatnd what his lyrics are actually syaing… the meaning behind what it means, could somebody help (10 easy points)

White lips, pale face

Breathing in snowflakes

Burnt lungs, sour taste

Light’s gone, day’s end

Struggling to pay rent

Long nights, strange men

And they say

She’s in the Class A Team

Stuck in her daydream

Been this way since 18

But lately her face seems

Slowly sinking, wasting

Crumbling like pastries

And they scream

The worst things in life come free to us

Cos we’re just under the upperhand

And go mad for a couple of grams

And she don’t want to go outside tonight

And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland

Or sells love to another man

It’s too cold outside

For angels to fly

Angels to fly

Ripped gloves, raincoat

Tried to swim and stay afloat

Dry house, wet clothes

Loose change, bank notes

Weary-eyed, dry throat

Call girl, no phone

And they say

She’s in the Class A Team

Stuck in her daydream

Been this way since 18

But lately her face seems

Slowly sinking, wasting

Crumbling like pastries

And they scream

The worst things in life come free to us

Cos we’re just under the upperhand

And go mad for a couple of grams

And she don’t want to go outside tonight

And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland

Or sells love to another man

It’s too cold outside

For angels to fly

Angels to fly

An angel will die

Covered in white

Closed eye

And hoping for a better life

This time, we’ll fade out tonight

Straight down the line

And they say

She’s in the Class A Team

Stuck in her daydream

Been this way since 18

But lately her face seems

Slowly sinking, wasting

Crumbling like pastries

They scream

The worst things in life come free to us

And we’re all under the upperhand

Go mad for a couple of grams

And we don’t want to go outside tonight

And in a pipe we fly to the Motherland

Or sell love to another man

It’s too cold

For angels to fly

Angels to fly

To fly, fly

Or angels to die

I think this is about a poor woman, who earns her money being a prostitute (he mentions ‘sell love to another man’. She has no money and she has to do those things to earn a little money, and she has been doing it for a long time (since 18) but now she starts getting more and more depressed and worried about her condition (But lately her face seems slowly sinking, wasting, crumbling like pastries), she is sinking deeper and deeper into the misery and there is no hope (it’s too cold for angels to fly). She flees in drugs (a couple of grams), or some other drugs you can put into a pipe (idk, marijuana? something like that?).

At the first verse, you see that the woman is unhealthy and sad (pale face, burnt lungs (probably from smoking)). She struggles to pay rent, and so she ‘sells love’ to strange men, during long nights.

I think by ‘stuck in her daydream’ it’s meant that she keeps fighting for a better life, but it is not really possible for her to achieve it.

We’re all under the upperhand I think means that she is suppressed by her boss, the government, stuff like that.

Ripped gloves (because she is poor, she cannot buy good stuff), raincoat (it’s raining, which symbolizes her sadness)

Tried to swim and stay afloat (she tries not to drown in the bad things that happen to her and her poorness and sadness, she tries to face everything and not to go down)

Dry house, wet clothes (her house is dry and her clothes are wet because of the rain, pretty literal)

Loose change, bank notes (she has only a little money, but bills keep coming)

Weary-eyed, dry throat (she is tired and sick)

Call girl, no phone (I’m not entirely sure what this means, actually… maybe he means that she is a call girl, but she cannot afford to pay a phone?)

I think it’s too cold for angels to fly means that there is so many misery (coldness) that good things (angels) cannot happen anymore: there is no hope for her life to improve.

Pretty sad song I think, but I think it’s rather beautiful. I hope I helped!

    ***********

Edit: I just read the other answer, and it made me think of one thing (I’m not entirely sure if it’s already mentioned in the other answer, if it is, Sorry! I didn’t mean to steal your idea!!). Anyway: Angels could indeed also refer to the girl about whom the song is written. She (the “angel”) could do great things (“flying”), but because of all her misery (the “cold”), she can’t. “It’s to cold for angels to fly” could mean that she has too much misery in her life to do the great things she could have done if she’d had more luck!

Once again, I’m sorry if I’m copying someone else’s idea right now, I just wanted to help! (I like analyzing songs haha)

She is a drug addict. Think about it!

White lips, pale face…she is discolored from drug use

Breathing in snowflakes??? Meth crystallizes your lungs. Also “Breathing in snowflakes” refers to both the cold weather and the young woman’s drug addiction

    Burnt lungs from smoking

She is Stuck in her daydreams

She’s Been this way since 18-been doing drugs since she was 18

    But lately her face seems

Slowly sinking, wasting-her face has sunken jaw bones

“And in a pipe she flies to the Motherland”-she is getting high… hittin’ a pipe!!

She’ll go mad for a couple of grams-she’ll do anything for more so

She sells love to another man-prostitutes herself…makin money for that next high

and in the end, An angel will die of an overdose while hoping for a better life. 🙁

Whats my source you ask??? I am a recovering addict. This is how I lived for 5 years of my life. I smoked crack and did what I had to to get more. In the last year of my active adiction, I was shooting cocaine. Tomorrow I will be celebrating 7 years clean from all mood and mind altering substances :’ ) This is a photo collage I made over a year and a half ago. That is my mug shot taken in August 2006 on the right (I wore a size 3) and me fat and healthy on the left. I hope this helps 😉

It’s written about a girl who is vulnerable, hence the reference angel, but life has dealt her a cruel hand and she’s now homeless living on the streets. She’s got a heroin addiction hence the pipe ref and the stuck in her daydream is ref to the drug induced state she lives in. She doesn’t want to but can’t fight her addictions and is forced into prostitution. The worst things in life come free to us is either a ref to her upbringing or the things in life that have happened to her that weren’t her fault, or if people seem to tell her that she’s just a waster like she just chooses this life at no cost to herself. Not sure about that one, beautiful tragic song. And the cold is ref to her life on the streets and how her life is too desperate fo her to find a way out. Sorry if i’ve reiterated the other answer in places cause i cant see it as i’m typing! 🙂

The song is about smoking crack or meth.

A slang name for these drugs is “snow” because of the appearance of the white crystals.

“Breathing in snowflakes” refers to both the cold weather and the young woman’s drug addiction, how she “goes wild for a couple of grams. when she “flies” in her “pipe” that is the glass pipe used for smoking these drugs, it is unlikely about marijuana. “Burnt lungs. Sour taste.”

That’s also why she’s in the “Class A Team” – these are Class A drugs.

Also the skin “crumbling like pastry” is a common side effect that the addicts of Class A drugs have.

Another slang connection to drugs might be to “angel dust” and all the angel references.

The prostitution is more obvious to understand. And now we know the reason why she does it.
