Back pain from HURDLES…….any help?

I am in tenth grade and run a low 16 in the 110 hurdles in NY. I am getting these sharp pains in my lower back on the left side (lead leg is left). I get the jolt of pain when i twist my back in certain spots. Currently i had to take off practice an ice it.

If anyone has had similar problems….. please help i love hurdles and don’t want to quit, i just don’t want the pain? thanks

I have had tons of problems whenever I hurdle. More than I should (I’m only 13!) If your left leg is your lead leg and that is where you are getting the pain, when you hurdle you are probably not keeping your body straight as you jump the hurdle. I’m not sure if ice is the best thing either, you should try heat instead because I had a problem similar and ice didn’t work for me.

    Some stretches (hurdles and regular):

Fence Kicks: Place a hurdle in front of a tall fence and lower the hurdle all the way. Kick at the fence with your lead leg as if you were actually jumping the hurdle and keep your trail leg planted on the ground. Try to keep your body straight as you do this.

Bridges: Get on the ground and lay on your back and do a bridge. (I know it sounds crazy but this is what always helps my lower back whenever it hurts)

Twists: Sit on the ground with one leg out and the other leg bent over it with your knee in the air. Twist in the opposite direction or to the side with the bent leg.

Those are some stretches, but I would just suggest resting for a couple of days without hurdling so you can fully recover.

Emotional pains are more difficult to handle . Physical pain can be handled with pain killers.
