So I’m starting track for the first time and today I used a 12 pound shot put and I could only make it like 10 feet -_-
But I’ll be using one that’s 8 pounds for the season. How far is the average? thanks! 🙂

I know that the school records at a lot of schools are in the high 40s to low 50s.
The average is probably in the 20s. At my local County Track Meet in 2010, the winning girl’s shot put throw was 33 ft 11.75 in and the county record is 40 ft 10 in, set in 2009. This is upsetting to me, personally, because she was from the school I graduated from and I had set the record back in 1986 (as an 8th grader) at 40 ft 9.25 in … on a throw that I tore my biceps on (I had pulled it a few days before and didnt tell anyone). My record stood for 23 years.
btw… my throw after the record throw went 3 feet 2 inches 🙂
Good luck.

The average is in the Mid 20s for girls, and mid 30s for guys in Junior High. I am a girl, going into Freshmen year of college, and I threw 32, my 8th grade year. My very first year though, throwing the 8 pound shot, I averaged 20ft. It all takes practice my dear.

I am in track right now and I would say you really want to get your shot distance up in the thirties because that s where the ok people are but their are some girls that are going to throw 40s
